Are you keen to take an active role in contributing to the health of our ocean?
If so, join other like-minded youth to take action for the future of our ocean resource. This summer programme will get you involved in environmental action and tackle the big issues that affect our ocean such as marine debris, climate change and coastal conservation. Join staff and students this summer at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre for hands-on experience, that will also be dealing with conservation, science communication, marketing and event management through youth-led projects.
The Ōtepoti Ocean Youth Programme will be based at the University of Otago’s New Zealand Marine Studies Centre at Portobello and is open to youth from 13-17yrs of age. The programme will be from December 17th-19th 2020 and January 20th-23rd 2021, from 10am to 3:30pm (with the exception of the last day being in the city centre from 7am to 1pm).
December 17th: Introduction to the programme. Emphasis on ocean conservation and science communication.
December 18th: Marine Metre Squared. Keeping an eye on the ora (health) of our shores.
December 19th: Marketing with a purpose. Creating merchandise with a conservation message.
January 20th: Litter Intelligence. Projects that can be used to change politics.
January 21st: SharkSpy. Gathering knowledge with Citizen Science.
January 22nd: Aquarium education. Ethics, Animal husbandry and preparation for outreach event.
January 23rd: Public outreach event in Dunedin, led by You(th).
Participants are expected to participate in the full programme and must arrange their own transport and lunches (morning and afternoon tea will be provided).
Ocean Youth is a growing movement, developed by Ocean Future Fund (formerly the SEA LIFE Trust Aust/NZ) and delivered through a range of marine centres including SEA LIFE Aquaria in Australia & Kelly Tarltons in Auckland, to raise awareness and understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Networking with other Ocean Youth programmes will be part of the programme.
