Are you passionate about the environment?
Are you keen to take an active role in contributing to the health of our ocean? 

If so, join our Ocean Youth Programme for hands-on experiences learning about ocean conservation. Through development of skills in science communication, technology, marketing and event management you will take an active role in finding solutions. 

The Ōtepoti Ocean Youth programme will be based at the University of Otago’s New Zealand Marine Studies Centre and is open to applicants from 13-17yrs of age. The programme will be held on  January 26th-28th 2022, from 10am to 3:30pm, January 29th from 7am to 1pm and February 12th and 13th 10am – 3.30pm.  

January 26thIntroduction to the programme. Hands-on learning about ocean conservation and the Sustainable Development Goals. 

January 27thShark Spy. Gathering knowledge on the small and large with Citizen Science. 

January 28thAquavan Ambassadors and sustainable business. Animal husbandry, setting up Aquavan and creating merchandise with a conservation message for outreach event. 

January 29thPublic outreach event in Dunedin, led by You(th). At the Otago Farmers Market 

February 12th : Toroa and their kaitiaki. Focus on ecotourism, community initiatives and technology used to study the sea. 

February 13th: Pakake and their kai. Fieldwork and methods to investigate ecosystem changes over time. 

Participants are expected to participate in all 6 days of the programme and must arrange their own transport and lunches (morning and afternoon tea will be provided). 

Ocean Youth is a growing movement, developed by Ocean Future Fund (formerly the SEA LIFE Trust Aust/NZ) and delivered through a range of marine centres including SEA LIFE Aquariums in Australia & New Zealand to raise awareness and understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Networking with other Ocean Youth programmes will be part of the programme. 

Participants must be vaccinated and have a vaccine pass to attend.
