The Speaker

This month we’ll hear from Nigel Marsh; a freelance Australian underwater photographer and photojournalist based in Brisbane. His work has been published in numerous magazines, newspapers and books, both in Australia and overseas. Nigel has dived extensively around Australia and his travels have taken him throughout Asia, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean. His underwater photographs have also won a number of international photographic competitions. Nigel has also produced over a dozen books, including dive guides, marine life guides and children’s books.

The Talk – Ex HMAS Brisbane – from warship to artificial reef

When the guided missile destroyer HMAS Brisbane was scuttled off the Sunshine Coast in 2005 it quickly became a very popular dive site, attracting local, interstate and international visitors. And while the wreck has been a boon for local tourism, one of the most interesting aspects of the scuttling has been the transformation of HMAS Brisbane from bare steel to a colourful and magnificent artificial reef. Brisbane based underwater photographer and photojournalist Nigel Marsh has been documenting that change from his first dive on the ship, only three days after scuttling. Over the last 14 years Nigel has witnessed the corals bloom, the fish populations increase and an explosion in invertebrate species, changing the warship into an oasis of marine life.

As usual the talk will be held in the Seal Stadium at SEALIFE Mooloolaba, on Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba. Doors open at 6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm start. Stay after the event for a discussion with the presenter and other attendees and enjoy a pizza-rific snack.
